review of abama, tenerife

Review of Abama from Wallis, guest in March 2010 "I had a great holiday thanks & would like to give some feedback which I am happy for you to put on your website if appropriate...!

The Abama is a beautiful hotel, although large in size it is chic & feels fairly intimate & personal (although I realise we went in low season).

However for a 5 star hotel, the service is at best inconsistent & below par for what you would expect for the rates they charge.

For example –

We went half-board & you are suppose to carry a paper voucher to each of the restaurants to ‘qualify’ for the meal. But who would want to / or remember to carry a voucher with them every evening. More to the point, surely if we give our room number, the computer should automatically register that we should not be charged for the meal??

The standard of the food in La Pampa Verona was occasionally disappointing. A tomato herb crusted Hake came served with just a hint of a red stain!  And served on very tired ‘boring’ vegs of cauliflower & carrots. Very un-inspiring. To the waiters credit , he agreed & offered a change of dish, but then the replacement dish came served with a chunk of plastic. Needless to say, this meal was not charged.

Also the service is slow – when you have a little baby out with you, the last thing you want  is to have to wait 15 mins just to have your order taken.  A couple next to us just walked off after 10mins.

At El Mirador, we sat through our starter & waiting for our main course with an empty glass – none of the waitresses seemed to want to offer us another drink. In the end, it was another occasion when we had to ask the staff to be served….Inattentive service for a 5 star rated resort.

The lift service is confusing – you have to use one lift to go up a few floors, then across to another lift  to get to certain destinations. They should have each lift button labelled with where it takes you (like in department shops)

I cancelled a tennis lesson at Guest Relations dept, but this was not relayed to Reception, hence I was charged on final bill.  When I queried this, the receptionist told me to take it up with Guest Relations. I suggested they call themselves to verify this…

The other mistakes on my bill were the half board evening meal charges – as mentioned, this should be programmed that no meal charges are added to my bill.

So the final payment on check-out took quite while to get right.

The partial sea-view as explained on our arrival was a non-sea-view room and quite dark as we were shadowed by outside pillars. We checked in late evening & had unpacked, so I didn’t want to move.

On the plus side! – yes, it is great if you want a nice adult hotel but also to  feel welcomed & looked after with a baby.

The food at the Mb (Michelin star) restaurant deserved its accolade.

The restaurant staff at breakfast remembered that my partner asked for real English Tea & they brought some for him the next day.

But overall, the service & thus the value for money is surprisingly poor

And one small niggle – there was only the headline grabbing tabloid Daily Mail as an English newspaper!!

With regards to the service provided by Essential Escapes I was more than happy & confident to recommend."
