Review from client LW, April 2010 "First of all: just to say that I had a really wonderful holiday and I’m sure I’d only be repeating all the other compliments which other guests have paid to the excellent service offered by the Shanti Ananda. I only have a couple of negative points to contribute and I offer these only to help you advise other guests rather than out of any negative sentiments about the hotel (if that makes sense).
The first, is that the hotel is gated and enclosed which I wasn’t expecting. There are ways of getting out via the public beach but there’s a fine line between relaxed seclusion and claustrophobia and I think I was starting to veer towards the latter by the end of my stay – this may be something to bear in mind if guests are planning a long visit. This is compounded by the fact that the Shanti Ananda, unlike some hotels I’ve stayed at, doesn’t offer complimentary shuttle runs to, say, Port Louis or another local town centre.
I was disappointed with the tour of the south of the island which I booked via the concierge. They offered two options: one was to go with an official tour company, the second was to have the hotel arrange a private tour. I ended up going with the second option which was a mistake because, while the hotel driver was an absolutely lovely chap, he knew next to nothing about any of the sights he was chauffeuring me to. So it wasn’t really so much a guided tour as a chauffeur driven sightseeing trip. If the hotel are going to offer this service – they need to employ people who are a bit more knowledgeable and communicative.
I recall that you told me earlier that other guests who had booked the more yoga-intense package had found this poor value for money as the 1-to-1 sessions were similar to the complimentary group sessions offered in the morning. However, I have to disagree with this – depending on what your yoga ability is. The morning sessions are an open level, gentle stretching class suitable for all. I therefore found the 1-to-1 session very helpful as the tutor was able to gauge my ability, push me harder and offer a more dynamic session. I would suggest that any guests who are looking for a more intermediate/challenging yoga experience, would find the morning sessions inadequate.
